We have been in Death Valley National Park for three weeks. Our days begin early, before 6 am. Mark is working by then, interacting with colleagues back East, and I soon get to work on the book I am writing. By early afternoon we have put in a full day and are ready to go explore a new trail or canyon. Beside hiking, we take photos -- of panoramic views from the peaks or of the immense desert floor. The mountains here are amazing - a geologist's dream, with every color and shape imaginable. What follows are some of our favorite mountain views. Which one is your favorite mountain?

The Olympic Peninsula gets a lot of rain and its temperate rainforests are alive with green moss. The cedars, Douglas firs and other trees in the woods near Port Ludlow offer a glimpse of the diverse ecosystem to be found here.
